State of the PR Industry in Orange County

Steve Churm, President/CEO Churm MediaSteve Churm owns one of the leading independent regional media companies in Southern California, publishing OC METRO, OC Menus, OC Family, Inland Empire Family and Southland Golf in print and online. With a monthly print circulation for the magazines of nearly 300,000 coupled with seven interactive websites, Churm Media has a total monthly audience of more than 1 million readers and viewers in one of most dynamic markets in the world. Churm Media also owns RipeOrange, a marketing, communications and design firm. Steve currently serves as Communications Chair on the the Orange County Business Council Executive Board of Directors.
SPEAKERS:
Dennis John Gaschen, M.A., APRMr. Gaschen is seasoned public relations professional with nearly 30 years experience. Dennis has been a member of the California State University, Fullerton, communications faculty since 1994. He has been a PR consultant since 1995, after 15 years in the corporate sector. Dennis is past OC-PRSA president, past PRSA Western District Chair, and past national PRSA Board member. In 2004, the Orange County PRSA Chapter awarded Dennis with its Distinguished Service Award.
Justin I. Wallin, MBA: Vice President, Probolsky Research Mr. Wallin drives Probolsky Research operations. He is a management, marketing and strategy expert with fifteen years of accomplished experience.
Mr. Wallin received his MBA from the University of Southern California, and has delivered senior-level strategic direction, tactical implementation and operational expertise to statewide, city and municipal governments, global Fortune 250 firms as well as political and non-profit organizations, small and medium businesses, and other organizations. Mr. Wallin is a “marketing concept" professional, with a passion for, and depth of experience in determining customer needs, wants and opinions. He has managed countless complex research programs, teams and campaigns for regional government clients, non-profit organizations and corporations. He has successfully brought to market hundreds of products, services and programs on international, national and regional bases.
Rob Richardson, County of OrangeRob Richardson has a broad range of public policy experience working with all levels of government. He is currently the Assistant County Executive Officer overseeing the Administration and Community/Media Relations departments and has served in this role since October of 2003. Over the last 21 years with the County of Orange, Rob has also served as Manager of Legislative Affairs, held various management positions within County government, and served as an Executive Assistant to a Member of the Board of Supervisors. Rob is the Vice President of the Santa Ana School Board and is an active member of the Santa Ana Kiwanis Club, Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club and previously has served as a City Councilman in Santa Ana for eight years. Rob is a graduate of UCLA with a Bachelor’s Degree, Cum Laude, in Political Science and History.
Laer Pearce, APR - President, Laer Pearce & AssociatesDuring the past 26 years, Laer Pearce has directed some of the most notable public relations campaigns in Orange County. His efforts influenced the federal listing of an endangered species, supporting South County’s expansion and the development of the 73 Toll Road. He also led the campaign to stop the hostile takeover of the County’s second-largest retail water district. He directed outreach and messaging while firefighters threatened to strike in Anaheim. And when Orange County needed community outreach and communications the most, Laer was there to help it through its most difficult time - the 1994 bankruptcy crisis.
He is a past president of OC/PRSA; a recipient of its Distinguished Service Award for an Individual; and in 2009, his firm, Laer Pearce & Associates, was honored with OC/PRSA's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award for an Organization.
