February 26, 2009Orange County American Red Cross Wants You: Volunteer PIOs Needed
OC/PRSA’s Community Service Committee and Porter Novelli are hosting an informational briefing for interested PR professionals on the American Red Cross Volunteer PIO program
WHAT:
The Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross is in need of volunteer Public Information Officers to assist in Public Affairs / Communications activities during disaster operations. Volunteer PIOs work with other Red Cross volunteers and staff during disaster relief operations to deliver critically needed information to the media. No experience is necessary and the Red Cross will train and mentor you through your development as a crisis volunteer. Your availability and volunteer hours are completely flexible and there is no permanent commitment. The Red Cross and our community sincerely need your help.
WHY:
For PR professionals looking to develop new skills in crisis situations or simply use your experience to benefit a great cause, the Red Cross Volunteer PIO program provides professional development opportunities and a way to give back to the community.
WHO:
Larry Fortmuller, chair of the OC Volunteer Advisory Council, will provide an overview of the Red Cross volunteer PIO opportunity at the briefing. He will outline the Red Cross mission, the role of volunteer PIOs, and share some of his experiences as a Red Cross volunteer PIO. In the past five years, he has served during Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Ike and many other local and national disasters. Even if you are unsure of the depth of your interest or limited in your ability to volunteer, this will be an informative and interesting evening.

Thursday, February 26 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
