Public Information Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Community Services Director, the Public Information Manager administers a wide range of public relations activities on a citywide basis by developing, implementing, and coordinating community outreach activities and special events. The position administers the writing and preparation of news releases, newsletters, brochures, presentations and related materials.

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED: (These examples do not include all the duties, which may be assigned; any one position may not include all the duties listed).

  • Coordinates public relations and marketing activities for the City and Redevelopment Agency.
  • Prepares public information by writing, editing, and publishing news releases, monthly/quarterly newsletters, brochures and promotional pieces.
  • Develops materials for the City's website and other media.
  • Advances the City's use of Internet technology.
  • Coordinates various special events and activities.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the City's strategic communication program.
  • Develops outreach materials and prepares presentations for community groups.
  • Researches and writes letters and speeches on behalf of the City and elected officials.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates full-time and hourly staff.
  • Establishes goals, objectives and priorities for staff.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve City operations, enhance the quality of work products, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality customer service.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: Operations of public information programs, current principles, techniques and objectives of public information programs, various journalistic styles, and principles and practices of effective supervision.

Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with staff and the public; work cooperatively with elected officials, department management staff and employees on a variety of communication activities; develop policies and strategies; organize the many activities involved in a public relations program; and utilize quality customer service skills and techniques.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible administrative experience involving the development of public information and community outreach programs. An equivalent combination of experience and applicable training may be substituted. Experience working with a public agency is strongly desired.

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration, communications, public relations, marketing or a related field is required. A Master's Degree in Public Administration or Public Relations is preferred.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
