COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR/PRESS SECRETARY

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assemblymember Tony Mendoza
s District Office, located in Norwalk, is seeking a full time Communications Director responsible for managing, coordinating and executing media activities  throughout the 56th Assembly District. Candidates must be motivated, organized, have strong written and verbal communications skills and work cooperatively.
 
  • Acts as the formal spokesperson and media liaison for the Assemblymember;
  • Develops and implements media, communications, and public relations strategies for the Assemblymember;
  • Remains abreast of current legislative and non-legislative issues about which the Assemblymember may be questioned;
  • Evaluates current events and media reports in the District and the State for their impact on the Assemblymember;
  • Provides ideas and advice on the effect the Assemblymember's actions and legislative activities have in the media;
  • Develops an annual Communications Plan.
  • Develops speaking points, speeches and drafts presentations.
  • Oversees the creation and distribution of the Assemblymember’s newsletters, press releases, website content and questionnaires;
  • Meets attendance requirements as established by the office;
  • Maintains a good working relationship with the Assemblymember, staff, media, and constituents;
  • Works well under pressure, handles stress and meet deadlines;
  • Accepts performance-based criticism and direction;
  • Willing, on occasion, to work a flexible schedule including long hours, nights and weekends, early mornings; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations or a closely related field preferred, but not required, including strong academic credentials.  Alternatively, a minimum two of years of related experience or training is required.
English/Spanish bilingual skills highly desirable.


SKILLS
AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
 
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Understanding of print, broadcast, and online media;
  • Basic knowledge of the legislative process, and organization of the State Capitol;
  • Knowledge of current issues and events in which the Assemblymember is involved;
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the representation of the Assemblymember's position on policy issues;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others;
  • Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner;
  • Knowledge of office policies, practices, and procedures;
  • Knowledge of office computer applications; and
  • Proficiency in word processing.
WORKING CONDITIONS: 
  • Work is mainly performed in an office environment.  Noise levels are usually moderate; and
  • Ability to work on the field and in small a work station without an expectation of privacy.
 SALARY:

$45,000-75,000
Salary commensurate with experience.
