Position: Director of Communications
Position Description: The Director of Communications is responsible for creation, production and management of communication strategies, campaigns and materials based on OCBC initiatives and messages. The strategies enhance the federal, state and local community awareness of OCBC to advance the organization’s goals and objectives. The Director of Communications oversees the overall management of OCBC’s brand and image, including advertising, communications, public relations, and social media. The Director reports to the President and CEO of OCBC, working with all Department Vice Presidents.
Specific Responsibilities:
LEADERSHIP
- Develop and implement communications strategies to promote the Business Council’s mission and goals, as well as its events and advocacy programs.
- Prepare annual budgets and business plans in addition to monthly reports to the Board of Directors.
- Communicate Orange County Business Council’s goals and accomplishments to investors, government officials, media, businesses, partners, and regulatory agencies.
- Support all communication and publications needs for other OCBC Departments.
- Provide appropriate supervision and mentoring of subordinate staff.
WRITING AND EDITING
- Responsible for writing and producing multiple publications and deliverables, both print and electronic (e.g., annual report, legislative action guide, biweekly e-newsletter, news articles, press releases, opinion editorials, website content, email campaigns, blogs, tweets, etc.).
- Write speeches and prepare speaking points for CEO and senior staff; Edit and produce support presentation materials (print and Power Point).
- Proofread and edit written material, as needed, for other Departments.
MEDIA RELATIONS
- Serve as the Business Council’s single point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate appropriate and timely responses.
- Proactively develop media relationships; pitch stories and event promotionals as appropriate.
- Promote and coordinate media coverage of OCBC’s major events.
- Organize and monitor OCBC traditional and social media coverage to track effectiveness. Disseminate news coverage to appropriate audiences.
- Utilize all media platforms including traditional print and radio, and new social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
WEB DEVELOPMENT AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
- Maintain and develop the OCBC website ensuring timely updates and robust content.
- Develop web interfaces to promote major events and initiatives, including video and audio podcasts.
- Design and coordinate the production of all communications deliverables, including websites, reports, publications, flyers, brochures, programs, advertisements, and other marketing collateral.
- Manage consultants and vendors for the production of communications deliverables, e.g., printers, graphic artists, photographers, mail houses, etc.
DESIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS (Windows platform)
- MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook).
- Web development software: Macromedia Contribute, Dreamweaver, Flash
- Graphic design applications: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia Fireworks
- Desktop publishing: Adobe InDesign
- Experience using email marketing software such as Constant Contact and iMakeNews
The successful candidate must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to write clearly for news organizations, speeches and presentations. Must also have strong interpersonal skills, familiarity with brand management, strong creativity skills, well-developed time management and decision-making skills, and an ability to seek innovative solutions and take initiative to achieve goals. A bachelor’s degree is required. A minimum of five years experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, advertising, or communications is required. The Director is expected to attend special events, some of which may occur in the evenings or on weekends. Some travel may be required.
