Scott Smith

Scott Smith
Scott founded Westbound Communications in April 2003 with a mission to go beyond the usual offerings of most public relations firms. The result is a firm that offers superior public relations and marketing counsel with an exceptional value proposition. His mission involves building a team of well-trained professionals who are empowered to succeed for their clients. With his foundation connected to the Southern California business community, Scott leads and manages a team that understands and can influence public opinion in the western United States.

Scott brings 22 years of experience as a public relations professional to Westbound Communications. During this time he has directed, managed and administered many successful communications programs for a range of clients in corporate and government sectors. Currently Scott manages work for the South Coast Air Quality Management District and serves as senior strategist for projects supporting Orange County Transportation Authority, Ready OC (Homeland Security for Orange County) and other Westbound clients. Along the way, Scott has also managed the reputations of numerous major brands including Pioneer Electronics, Anheuser-Busch, Coors, Technicolor, Ralston Purina, Deluxe, Nintendo, Sprint, Disney, Alaskan Brewing Company, Gardenburger, KFC, Taylor Woodrow, Toyota and others. Scott’s expertise in strategic planning, issues management and crisis communications situations serve as an asset when working in the government and corporate sectors.

Before founding Westbound Communications, Scott was senior vice president, managing director of Magnet Communications in Southern California where he managed national accounts and staff in three separate offices. He assumed this role in 1999 after Magnet acquired CSP Communications, Inc., an independent consumer product and business-to-business public relations agency where he spent five years as its chief executive officer. Under his leadership, CSP grew from annual revenue of $200,000 per year to nearly $2 million.

Scott is an active board member of the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross, which is also a featured pro-bono client for Westbound. Winner of numerous awards in the field of public relations, Scott holds a master's degree in communication arts and sciences from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California, where he also taught public speaking courses and served as assistant coach of the Trojan Debate Team.
