The Passing of Pat Ware Markley, APR

OC/PRSA has lost a public relations professional who served the County of Orange for nearly 25 years.  Pat (Ware) Markley passed away January 14, 2010 after a long and brave struggle with cancer.

As a PR practitioner holding an undergraduate degree from CSU Long Beach and graduate degree from USC, Pat began her career at the Orange County Office of Protocol in 1985 and in 1991 moved over to John Wayne Airport handling public information officer duties.  In 1994-95, Pat served the County Executive Office eloquently communicating with the media about the County bankruptcy. Pat returned to the Airport until 1999 when she transferred to the Orange County Health Care Agency. There she provided strategic direction for the agency’s response to critical public health issues including Mad Cow Disease and West Nile Virus. In 2005, Pat returned to the County Executive Office as Manager of Community/Media Relations.

Her career began with the use of traditional PR tools and communication and transitioned through the marriage of technology and communication – the Internet. Pat was an asset to the County, a mentor for many public relations professionals and an “accredited” member of the Public Relations Society of America. She is survived by her husband David, two daughters, five grandsons, one brother and two sisters. She will be sorely missed.

Services are scheduled for Friday, January 22 at 10:00 am at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove (12141 Lewis Street).  The family advises that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pat’s memory to the Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance.  Donation information can be found at www.ovarianoc.org.
