Taco Bell’s Matt Prince and Taylor Digital of San Clemente Honored
With Distinguished Service Awards while Les Goldberg Earns Mentorship Award

SEPT. 26, 2019 (TUSTIN, Calif.) — Powerhouse Communications of Santa Ana, Calif. took home the top honor at the 44th Annual PROTOS awards, which celebrated exceptional public relations and communications work and professionals. The annual awards program administered by the Orange County Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (OCPRSA) was hosted at the Marconi Automotive Museum and Sam Rubin, entertainment anchor for KTLA-TV served as emcee.

“I’ve been involved with the industry’s awards program for over 25 years both nationally and locally, and this year’s caliber of individuals and organizations along with their programs and projects is astonishing,” said OCPRSA President Ted Nguyen, who also works for the Orange County Transportation Authority. “In today’s world of cynicism and conflict, this year’s award recipients really stood out not only for positively impacting change, but by doing so with honesty, integrity and respect toward the betterment of society.”

Les Goldberg, APR, principal of Les Goldberg Public Relations, was the winner of the inaugural Rick Miltenberger Mentorship Award, established in memory of Rick Miltenberger from Westbound Communications to an individual who exemplifies mentorship as Miltenberger did throughout his career.

Awarded “Best in Show” for Tsurutokame “Mission” Campaign, the judges’ comments included, “Excellent body of work for your client,” “The account team met the challenges of the time difference and the language barrier,” and “News coverage prompted the Japan Prime Minister to visit the restaurant and congratulate its owner. It’s understandable that the client was thrilled.”

The 2019 Distinguished Service Award winners are Taylor Digital (in the “organization” category) and Matt Prince (in the “individual” category), senior manager of Public Relations and Brand Experience at Taco Bell. The agency and Prince were honored for their outstanding contributions to the goals and ethics of the public relations profession and exemplary dedication to the Orange County community.

Samantha Sands from Biola University and Myra Pimentel from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), both student members of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) were awarded the Shining Star “Emerging Leader” Award. This award is OCPRSA’s highest honor for a graduating senior, recognizing outstanding service, commitment and leadership within their PRSSA chapter and local community.

Kiyong Kim, a faculty member of Biola University and Charla Batey, communications specialist, Cox Communications and president-elect, OCPRSA, were also recognized for earning an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) certified by the Universal Accreditation Board (UAB). The accreditation program aims to improve the practice of public relations by assessing competence in 60 areas of knowledge, skills and abilities associated with the profession.

“PROTOS is an opportunity to highlight the fantastic work done here in the Orange County area by our amazing communications professionals. The winners are inspirational, and we’re excited to celebrate them,” said Liz Wilkins, 2019 PROTOS co-chair and senior vice president and account director for IMW Agency.
