Preparing for a new communications and PR world in 2021

Join your OCPRSA and HPRA OC colleagues to hear from some of the top communications and PR professionals in southern California about the new landscape we find ourselves in heading into 2021. After a challenging year with many firsts, how will our field look different in 2021? What has the COVID-19 pandemic taught us about effective communications in a crisis? How has gaining media coverage changed?

Most importantly, how can you begin preparing for 2021, moving past “unprecedented” and adapting to new communications and PR strategies that set you up for long-term success?

Breakout groups throughout the event will provide opportunities to network with other attendees as we reflect on 2020 and look toward a brighter 2021.

Justine Houston-BrownJustine Houston-Brown, APR

Justine Houston-Brown, APR, is an experienced communicator and public relations/marcom professional. With nine years’ agency experience, she has led high-impact PR programs for a variety of B2B, B2C, and nonprofit clients such as Dole Food Company, Boys & Girls Clubs, Orange County Community Foundation, Toshiba Memory America, PROMISE Technology, and Cytek Biosciences.Driven by optimism that never fails, she takes pride in providing the best client experience possible. Strategic program management that anticipates client needs is at the helm of each account she leads and is inclusive of thorough research and planning, creative yet effective execution, and evaluation that leadership can count on (literally) while proactively managing day-to-day client relations. Skilled in media outreach as well –Justine has placed clients in top-tier publications such as Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, CNET, Mashable, WIRED, Inc., Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, USA Today, PCMag, EE Times, Engadget, and more.

She obtained the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) credential in the fall of 2020, joining an esteemed league of PR professionals focused on implementing progressive and ethical public relations industry practices into each endeavor.

Justine enjoys staying at the forefront of the profession as president-elect of OCPRSA, the Orange County, Calif. Chapter of The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and a board member of PRSA’s Western District. She is slated to be the first Hispanic president of OCPRSA in 2021 and will concurrently serve as chair-elect of the District.

She graduated cum laude from California State University, Fullerton, with a BA in Communications and public relations emphasis. During her spare time, Justine enjoys exploring her creativity through graphic design, baking and decorating custom cakes, and spending quality time with her husband, family, and water-loving dog Ducky.

Fred Cook

Fred Cook is the Director, USC Annenberg Center for Public Relations and Chairman, Golin. Cook has worked at Golin for over 30 years, during which he has had the privilege to work with a variety of high-profile CEOs, including Herb Kelleher, Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs. He has also managed a wide variety of clients, including Nintendo, Toyota and Disney. In 2014, Cook published Improvise: Unconventional Career Advice from an Unlikely CEO, which shares the wisdom he gained as a cabin boy on a Norwegian tanker, doorman at a 5-star hotel and chauffeur for drunks. In 2015, after speaking on college campuses around the world, Fred accepted an additional position with the University of Southern California as the director of the USC Annenberg Center for Public Relations, whose mission is to shape the future of public relations – and those who will lead it – through research, education and thought leadership. The Center’s signature initiatives include the Global Communication Report, USC Annenberg’s Kenneth Owler Smith Symposium, and the Relevance Report. Fred is also the host of the Center’s new podcast series, #PRFuture, featuring interviews with professionals and advocates who are changing how the industry communicates. Victoria Lim

Victoria Lim is a senior manager of executive and external communications for Experian North America, focusing on reputation management and diversity and inclusion. She has led award-winning communications efforts at the highest levels for organizations in global entertainment, information services, higher education, electronic auto manufacturing, telecommunications, national sports leagues and beauty.

Before transitioning to public relations and communications, she was an award-winning journalist, including Emmy and AP honors, who set herself apart from the industry norm asone of the first journalists to create the practice of multimedia storytelling. The Poynter Institute dubbed her the “Queen of Convergence.” Victoria has served multiple roles in higher education, as an assistant professor for the iconic University of Missouri School of Journalism and adjunct instructor for the University of Tampa and University of South Florida; and on the administrative side as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Communications for Brandman University.She leads journalism and communications trainings around the world on best practices for content marketing, public relations and journalism.A graduate of Temple University, Victoria holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Radio-TV and Film. Temple inducted her into its “Journalism Hall of Fame,” awarding her the Lew Klein Alumni in the Media award.

To encourage and support journalism and communications, Victoria is a board member for the Orange County chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (OCPRSA); she has served as a board member for national journalism organizations including the Asian American Journalists Association, for which she was voted Chapter President of the Year and co-founded the AAJA Sports Task Force to support Asian American journalists covering and working in sports.

Chris Perez

Chris Perez is a marketing communications professional who has helped over 120 businesses and organizations in brand marketing, public relations and training. In addition to working as a partner with Westbound Communications in Southern California, he is also an adjunct professor, most recently in the Annenberg School of Communications at his alma mater, the University of Southern California.

Chris has worked at three of the world’s most prestigious PR agencies — Euro RSCG, Fleishman Hillard and Golin — and founded his own firm that was eventually acquired by Havas Worldwide. He continues to develop campaigns that address sales objectives, brand development, corporate communications and reputation management. Just a few of the organizations he has counseled in his career include the counties of Orange and San Bernardino, Toyota, Caltrans, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Experian, Price Pfister and the United Way.

Jared Ruth

Jared Ruth is the Director of Marketing for Cloud RapidScale and Cox Business Cloud Solutions, Indirect and Carrier. Prior to his current role, Jared served as the Director of Field Marketing in California. Jared has more than 20 years of technology and marketing experience and an outstanding track record leading marketing organizations. He graduated from Azusa Pacific University where he earned his degree in business and marketing and is based out of Cox’s Orange County office.

Leshelle V. Sargent

Leshelle V. Sargent is currently Executive Director, Publicity, for Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Publicity/Marketing in Burbank, Calif., where she directs publicity for series such as The CW’s Black Lightning(which also streams on Netflix), TNT’s Claws(starring award-winning actress Niecy Nash), Netflix’sSelf Made: Inspired by the LifeMadam CJ Walker(starring Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer, Blair Underwood and Tiffany Haddish), and Cherish the Dayon the Oprah Winfrey Network, OWN-TV. Prior to joining Warner Bros., she was a publicist with MSNBC, Hay House/SmileyBooks, PBS and The Smiley Group, Inc. (TSG). Leshelle began her professional career in the fashion/music industry, working for Tina Knowles Productions and Music World Entertainment. She currently sits on the board of Public Relations Society of Los Angeles, (PRSA-LA), and is a member of the Television Academy, ColorComm and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
