Manager, Government Affairs

The Government Affairs Manager will support our Orange County and Palos Verdes market.

Responsible for building and maintaining positive relations with local, state, and federal (limited) elected government officials, franchise authorities, and municipalities to cultivate an optimal operating environment for Cox.


Promotes and advances the interests of the company at the local, state, and federal (limited) level to shape emerging issues and to enable CCI to operate in its markets without undue legislation, regulation, or taxation restrictions.

Advocates with elected officials to shape public policy in favor of Cox.

May develop grass-roots campaigns to advocate Cox’s position on important issues.

Coaches management on tactics for maintaining good relationships with public entities and appearances before legislators

Remove local and state regulatory barriers through proactive strategy implementation.

Continually evaluates results of government relations activities, develops strategies, and adjusts activities to meet changing local conditions.

May manage political donation program, PAC program, and other influencing strategies.

Negotiates agreements and renewals at the local and state level.

Develops and implements tactical plans for department including priorities, objectives, and timelines to meet performance goals.

May ensure timely filing of all required regulatory papers, including state franchise amendments, annual reports, 30-day notices, and data requests.

Collaborate closely with Community Relations, Media Relations, Customer Relations, Marketing, Cox Media, Cox Business, Construction, Planning and other departments to ensure alignment of strategies and initiatives for maximum business benefit.

May be a People Leader or a Functional Manager without direct reports; directly leverages, influences, and has on-going access to reporting/non-reporting resources to achieve results.

Manages alignment and consistency in people practices, management activities, and customer service delivery in an effort to achieve goals.

May develop policies and procedures for department to standardize practices.

Analyzes market trends; coordinates and communicates with others to determine appropriate responses.

Establishes and leverages strong partnerships with key departments and internal/external customers.

May participate in hiring decisions, employee development, budgeting, training, and managing performance. Motivates and coaches others to achieve department and company goals.

Works closely with local municipalities on permitting for the company, including the ability to handle escalation issues.

Position could include collaboration and travel to other Cox markets or corporate.

The position is expected to attend community events in the morning, evening, or on weekends.

This role will be located in Orange County.



5+ years’ experience in related field (i.e., government or public affairs).

BS/BA in related discipline may be required or advanced degree and 4+ years’ experience in related field.


Local government affairs experience and established relationships

Strong presentation and public speaking skills

Strong writing skills

Ability to demonstrate examples of successful advocacy and coalition building
