OCPRSA Represented at National Conference in Atlanta

Submitted by Robin Wachner, OCPRSA President-Elect

Earlier this month, current OCPRSA President Jenny Wedge and President-Elect, Robin Wachner, along with OCPRSA past-President and Immediate Past Chair, PRSA Western District, Katie Coates, APR, had the opportunity to attend the PRSA 2015 Leadership Assembly in Atlanta, GA as voting delegates. The Leadership Assembly, the annual stakeholder meeting of PRSA, is a vital part of governance for the Society. Leaders from all sectors of the Society — Chapters, Sections, Districts, the College of Fellows and others come together to examine the issues facing PRSA and the profession of public relations.

During the Assembly, delegates from the Orange County chapter had the opportunity to discuss and vote on amendments to the PRSA Bylaws, elect the 2016 board of directors and assembly delegates-at-large and discuss issues of importance to the profession. Some of the issues voted on included supporting a revision to the dues structure for Associate members (recent college graduates). Currently, the Associate PRSA membership includes 2 years at a reduced rate, going to full price at year 3. However, after that period, more than 50 percent of Associate members decline to renew their membership due to the increased cost. It was voted in favor of extending the Associate membership to a 4-year period to transition and become Regular members. This scale gives young professionals the chance to grow with PRSA as they grow in their career.

The other issue voted on was a new SMART dues plan. Under this plan, The PRSA Board of Directors shall set the annual membership dues structure, provided that dues may not increase by more than 5% in any five-year period without the authorization of the Leadership Assembly. The board shall report its projections on the current five-year period to the Leadership Assembly each year. Previously, the Leadership Assembly approved the membership dues structure, which was proposed by the board. Delegates voted in favor of the new SMART dues plan.

Also on the agenda was a Western District Board Meeting. In attendance were Western District liaisons from member areas including:

•    California Gold Coast Chapter
•    California Inland Empire Chapter
•    Colorado Chapter
•    Hawaii Chapter
•    Las Vegas Valley Chapter
•    Los Angeles Chapter
•    Orange County Chapter
•    Phoenix Chapter
•    Pikes Peak Chapter
•    San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter
•    Southern Arizona Chapter

At this meeting, each region had the opportunity to share a memento representing their geographic area and talk about issues and upcoming events. Orange County had the pleasure of sharing details about being the host of the next Western District Conference, being held April 21-23 at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa. More details coming soon.

Being on the board of OCPRSA is a great way to get involved with the chapter and to let your voice be heard in the PR community. If you are interested in serving on the board or one of its committees, please email Matt Prince at
