Receiving More by Giving Back

By Elena Bosch, OCPRSA Community Service Chair

It was a hazy Saturday morning in Costa Mesa as I approached the doors that would open my heart and a universe of possibilities forever. It was my first of what would be several PR Gives Back events hosted by OCPRSA that I would attend and one that would impact the community as much as it impacted my career.

The OCPRSA PR Gives Back event is a bi-annual networking and volunteer opportunity for public relations and nonprofit professionals. Volunteers include seasoned PR professionals as well as entry-level public relations professionals and students who provide advice to local nonprofits looking for creative marketing and communications insights.

Elena and Saren
On this fateful day, I was paired with Saren Stiegel, founder of the Glow Effect, a hybrid nonprofit that provides mentorship to driven female leaders throughout the world. Based in Los Angeles, Saren had the goal of expanding the Glow Effect market reach to include women working in Orange County and San Francisco. Her genuine passion to empower women in these competitive markets as well as emerging economies such as Uganda and Nepal were truly inspirational, and I was immediately drawn to help.

Together, we brainstormed ideas for how to best conduct outreach in the new markets and examined her existing communications plan for opportunities to improve. Once the session was over, I was so moved by Saren’s mission that we agreed to continue working together and have since mentored each other through numerous Glow Effect campaigns and beyond. She opened my eyes to the true power of giving back while providing endless possibilities for growth within myself.

Since volunteering at my first OCPRSA PR Gives Back event, I’ve had the honor of working with organizations addressing homelessness, human trafficking, animal rescues and more. I’ve also made life-long friendships with members of organizations doing good in my community and that’s a benefit of OCPRSA membership you cannot put a price on.

The first OCPRSA PR Gives Back event of 2019 takes place on Thursday, June 27 at WeWork in Costa Mesa. I encourage PR professionals to not only sign up to volunteer, but also to invite their team members and nominate their favorite nonprofits to come to our event as well.

PR professionals should have enough experience to provide thoughtful and strategic action items. Non-PRSA members are welcome.

Organizations looking to attend should be a registered 501(c)(3) or a social impact organization with a viable “give-back” component and have been in business for at least two years. Organizations should also be local to the Orange County area, primarily serving residents of the region.
